Porches

Porches came up on the first call, and around Marion there are a lot of them — older houses with front porches that have been holding up the same roof since before anybody reading this was born.

Rebuilding an old porch

The usual story on an older porch is that the deck and the steps have gone soft while the roof above them is fine. That is a rebuild, not a teardown: the roof gets temporarily supported, the rotten framing and decking come out, new posts and footings go in, and the roof comes back down onto something that will hold it.

Posts, railings and steps

Posts that have wicked water up from the deck, railings that move when you lean on them, and steps that are the wrong rise are the three things most likely to get somebody hurt. They are also the three cheapest things to put right.

Porch roofs

A porch roof is a small roof with a lot of flashing, and it is usually the first part of a house to leak. It can be shingled to match the main roof or run in metal, which on a low-pitch porch is often the better answer.

What this normally includes

  • Porch deck and framing rebuilt under an existing roof
  • New posts, footings and beam work
  • Railings, balusters and steps to a safe rise and run
  • Porch roofs in shingle or metal, ceilings and soffit
  • New covered entries and small porch additions
